January Highlights… Before we proceed with the upcoming events for January, we’d like to take this opportunity to wish all of our readers a happy, healthy new year. Thank you for continuing to come on line to find out what’s happening at the Waterford Retirement Community in Barrie. January is going to be an eventful month as we send our cruisers off on January 21st for a week to the Caribbean Islands. We’re looking forward to hearing all about their trip when they return on January 28th. For those of us who are staying back here in Barrie we are offering some new activities this month which include taking our residents to aqua-fit classes hosted by the City of Barrie if this is something any of them are interested in attending. Then every Tuesday afternoon at our regular Social Hour, beginning January 3rd, we will be planning “Fun Tuesday’s” which will include theme days, team trivia, karaoke, etc. We hope these activities will help us forget the winter we’ll be seeing outside. We have some great performances planned this month as part of our Wednesday afternoon Music Hour. Our first performer of the month is Ken Losell who is a regular here at the Waterford. On January 11th we have a new performer who is a folk acoustic musician. His name is Lawrence Mark and we are looking forward to hearing this different style of music. On January 18th “Moon Glow” will be performing and our final performers of the month are the Sandy Cove men’s Glee Club who will be providing the music for our January Monthly Birthday Party. Since January 25th is also Robbie Burns Day, we have arranged for our “Piper” friend Adrian Stokes to come during our dinner time and pipe in the Haggis for us. This should be a fun event. Our thanks to Adrian for doing this for us. Guest Speakers this month include a presentation from a respiratory therapist on Tuesday, January 3rd. The following Tuesday, January 10th, we have arranged for a physiotherapist of come and do a falls screening assessment for any of our residents who would like to have it done. The winter months are especially dangerous for the senior population who are at risk of slipping and falling. For this reason, we felt it was important to bring in a professional who could talk about the potential for falls and could make recommendations to reduce the risk of falling. On January 17th our guest speaker is from Gilda’s Club in Barrie. Some of our residents will be touring Gilda’s Club the week before and this will give them a chance to ask questions they may not have asked during their visit. It will also allow others who were unable to go on the outing to learn more about Gilda’s Club and the good work they do. Our final speaker of the month is a Foot Care Provider Mary Ann Inglis who will be talking about the importance of good foot care. “Speakers Corner” is scheduled every Tuesday morning at 11 A.M. Please feel free to attend any or all of these sessions if they are of interest to you. We continue to offer our regular weekly shopping outings as well as our lunch and dinner outings. This month the residents will be going to The Town & Country Steakhouse for dinner on January 12th and the Herb N’ Sage Restaurant on January 27th for lunch. We will be offering some additional outings as well throughout the month . On January 13th we will be visiting Gilda’s Club to learn more about their support services and programs. On January 19th some of our residents will be making their regular visit to Georgian Downs and later that evening some will be attending the Big Band Music Program at Barrie City Hall. We have one final special event for the month which is our ever-popular Roast Prime Rib Dinner Buffet. This is scheduled for Saturday, January 28th. As always a full Calendar of Events and Newsletter for January is available at our Reception Desk for families and friends of our residents. We would like to remind you that you are always welcome to join us for any of our upcoming events. Thank you for continuing to check in on us. Once again we would like to wish you and your families a very happy new year.
